[TEPS 강좌] 외국어와 어휘력

K: I really envy my friend. She knows a lot of vocabularies.
E: Really? How many foreign languages can she speak?

K: Just English.
E: Then you mean that she has a large vocabulary.

K: 내 친구가 부러워. 어휘력이 풍부하거든.
E: 정말? 몇 개 국어를 할 줄 아는데?

K: 영어만 해.
E: 그럼 많은 단어를 안다는 뜻이네.

vocabulary라는 말은 한 언어에 있는 모든 어휘를 가리키며 보통 단수형으로
쓰인다. 앞의 대화에서 "She has a large vocabulary."라는 말은 "그녀는
단어를 많이 안다"(She knows a lot of words)는 뜻이다. 반대로 "She has
a limited vocabulary of English."라고 하면 "그녀의 영어 어휘는 한정되어
있다"는 말이다.
