○전쟁 왕국?

툭하면 이런 저런 전쟁이 터지고 있다. 난무하는 국민운동들을 두고
하는 말이다. 서슬 퍼랬던 국민운동들이 용두사미(anticlimax)로 전락하는
것이 다반사였다.

A: We are continuously involved in wars of one kind or another.
(이런 저런 것과 끝없이 전쟁을 치르고 있어) There is a war against
drugs, war against drunk driving, war against crime, and most recently,
a war against corruption.(마약과의 전쟁, 음주운전과의 전쟁, 범죄와의
전쟁, 가장 최근에는 부패와의 전쟁을 치르고 있지)
B: You seem to be championing wars.(전쟁 옹호자처럼 들리는군) Are
they even effective?(그것들이 효과나 있을까?)

A: It depends on who is doing the fighting and whether or not a
scandal is uncovered.(그건 누가 주체가 되며, 스캔들이 철저히 파헤쳐지느냐
여부에 달려있어)
B: 'Selective success'… an interesting concept.(선택적 성공이라…
묘한 개념이군)
