의경·군인·교사·의사가 앳돼 보이기(look young) 시작하면 나이 들어간다는 숨길 수 없는 신호(tell-tale sign of aging)다. 이 무렵이면 날씬한 허리(narrow waist)와 넓은 마음(broad mind)이 자리를 맞바꾼다(change places with each other). 뱃살은 불어나고(gain weight in the gut) 마음은 옹졸해진다(become narrow-minded).
급속히 변해가는 자녀와 다시 친해져 보려(reacquaint ourselves with our fast-changing children) 하지만 방문 닫고 들어가기 일쑤다. 하릴없이 들여다본 거울 속에선 우락부락 낯선 중년(middle-aged craggy stranger)이 되쏘아본다(stare back at you).
아이들 이름을 헷갈린다(get your children's names muddled up). 집에서 기르는 강아지 이름으로 부르기도 한다. 세 번째 가서야 바로잡는다(get it right on the third try). TV 리모컨 작동하는 데(operate the TV's remote control) 애처로울 정도의 무능함(pathetic inability)을 드러낸다.

젊은이들 대화를 전혀 이해 못한다(make neither head nor tail of it). 최신 노래 톱 10 중 아는 노래가 하나도 없다. 개그 프로 보면서 아이들은 웃어대는데 어리둥절한 표정 지으며(make a puzzled look) 코미디는 옛날 것이 재미있었다고 투덜댄다(murmur with discontent). TV 앞에서 자기도 모르게 잠드는(fall asleep in front of TV in spite of ourselves) 일이 잦아진다.
머리카락은 빠지고(lose head hair), 코·귀·눈썹·얼굴 털은 길어진다. 시끄러운 술집을 싫어하게(hate noisy pubs) 된다. 잔소리와 불평불만(nitpicking and grunting)이 늘어나고, "내가 젊었을 때는…"이라는 말을 되뇌게 된다. 옷과 신발은 모양새보다 편안함으로(for comfort rather than style) 선택한다. 갑자기 물으면 자기 나이도 5초는 지나야 생각해낸다. 앉으면서 한숨 소리 내고(sigh), 몸 숙일(bend down) 때면 신음 소리 낸다(groan).
젊을 때는 그럴 일 없으리라는 듯 연세 든 분들 업신여기고 홀대한다(disdain and mistreat the elderly). 처음엔 바지 지퍼 올리는 것을 잊어버리다가(forget to pull your zipper up) 나중엔 내리는 것조차 잊어버리는 날이 누구에게나 오는 건데….
