오늘의 어휘: contemplate, ritually, intrepid
Part 1. Vocabulary Study_ 어휘를 단순히 암기 하지 말고, 3개의 어휘로 자신만의 스토리를 만들어 보세요.
"After contemplating for a while, ritually the female shaman started walking barefoot in an intrepid manner over the blade of a fodder chopper."
1. contemplate_ 어떤 장소, 지위에서 무엇인가에 대해 곰곰이 생각하다라는 뜻을 가지고 있다. 그냥 단순히 생각하는 것이 아니라 어떤 일의 발생 가능성을 놓고 깊숙이 오랫동안 생각하는 것이다. 동의어인 ponder over의 경우 과거의 일, 이미 지난 일에 대해 곰곰이 생각하는 것으로 앞으로 일어날 일에 대해 생각하는 contemplate와는 쓰임새가 조금 다르다.
2. ritually_ 라틴어 ritus는 종교, 의식이다. 그래서 ritual 역시 종교상의 의식 절차라는 뜻이 있다. 또한 종교적인 의식은 반복적으로 행해지기 때문에, 항상 규칙적이고 반복적으로 행하는 의례적인 일을 말할 때 사용하기도 한다. ritually는 ritual의 부사형으로 종교적으로, 의례적으로, 반복적으로 라는 뜻을 가지고 있다.
3. intrepid_ 접두사 in은 not의 개념을, 라틴어 trepidus는 불안해하는 이라는 뜻을 가지고 있다. 그래서 intrepid는 공포가 전혀 없는, 즉 뻔뻔할 정도로 대담하고, 어떤 상황에서도 겁이 없는 용감무쌍하다는 뜻이다.
Part 2. Writing Practice_ 3가지 어휘를 포함시켜 'faith' 에 대한 자신만의 글을 완성해 보세요.
1. Define your faith and describe what has motivated that faith.
2. Illustrate how you have practiced it for real life purposes.
3. Write a conclusion with emphasis on the importance of 'one's faith'.
