South Korean presidential office on June 19 said that two Alabai dogs, Turkmenistan’s national breed, which President Yoon Suk-yeol and his wife received as gifts during their Central Asia trip, arrived at Incheon International Airport around 9 p.m. on June 18.
The Alabai were officially handed over to the South Korean government at the Turkmenistan Embassy in Seoul that afternoon and have begun their new lives at the presidential residence. These dogs were gifted by former Turkmen President and Chairman of the People’s Council, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, and his wife, symbolizing the friendship between the two countries.
The two Alabai puppies, about 40 days old, are named after their breed—”Alabai” for the female and “Garabash” for the male. The name Alabai means “mixed colors,” while Garabash means “black head.”
Alabai are highly symbolic in Turkmenistan, which celebrates the last Sunday of October each year as Alabai Day. These dogs have historically protected sheep and goats from predators like wolves during the country’s long tradition of nomadic life. It is said that Alabai dogs are only gifted to close relatives or trusted friends in Turkmenistan.
Berdimuhamedow is known to hold these dogs in high regard, indicating the exceptional goodwill and respect the Turkmenistan government has for South Korea and Yoon’s family.
The Alabai will join the presidential residence’s current 11 pets, which include six dogs and five cats. Based on recommendations from local handlers, the new additions will initially be kept separate from the other animals. They will spend some time adjusting to their new environment under the care of dedicated handlers and veterinarians.
