Largest doctors’ group to launch a full-scale strike on June 18

South Korea’s largest doctors’ organization, the Korea Medical Association (KMA), said it plans to launch a full-scale strike on June 18 to protest the government’s medical school quota hike. “It is time for the nation’s 140,000 doctors to form a united front against the government and its misguided policies,” KMA President Lim Hyun-taek said during a rally at the association’s office in central Seoul’s Yongsan District. If the strike occurs as planned, it will be the first all-out collective action by physicians in Korea since a similar walkout in 2020. Thousands of trainee doctors have been on strike since February.

South Korea to restart loudspeaker broadcasts against North Korea’s trash balloon offensive

The South Korean government said it will resume anti-North Korean propaganda loudspeaker broadcasts in border areas for the first time in six years in response to Pyongyang’s campaign of sending trash-filled balloons across the border. Over the weekend, North Korea sent over 300 trash-carrying balloons to South Korea, marking the third such campaign since late May. North Korea has so far sent more than 1,000 balloons filled with trash and manure.

Instagram overtakes Naver as the “most-used app” in Korea again

Instagram has surpassed Naver as the “most used app” in terms of usage time and “most frequently used app” in South Korea for two straight months, according to a survey conducted by market research firm WiseApp. Koreans spent a combined 389.93 million hours on Instagram in April, overtaking Naver by about 4.641 million hours. Experts say Naver lacks short-form content, such as Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, that draws in users.
