President Yoon Suk-yeol said on Mar. 7, “We will expedite the Great Train eXpress (GTX) project that will connect Incheon and Seoul within 30 minutes. Today’s groundbreaking ceremony for Line B will be opened by 2030. This is the beginning of a transportation revolution that will make it possible to commute to work in 30 minutes.”
Earlier today, President Yoon chaired a public forum on the theme of ‘Incheon, Korea’s Gateway City to the World’ at Incheon City Hall. During the event, he made an announcement regarding the construction of the D and E subway lines. He stated that “I will ensure the foundation for construction is laid within my term, including passing the preliminary examination.” The discussion, which was the eighth of its kind, was streamed live.
President Yoon has announced a plan to expand the port infrastructure investment at Incheon Port. By 2027, Incheon Port’s Piers 1-2 will be developed into a fully automated smart port. The aim is to upgrade it to a first-class trade port, and establish a ‘cold chain specialty zone’ and an ‘e-commerce specialty zone’ on the land behind the port.
The logistics function will be relocated to the new port, while Incheon Inner Harbor, which has served as a trading port, will be transformed into a multifaceted cultural space that will attract tourists interested in maritime culture. The area situated behind the Incheon International Ferry Terminal will be turned into a global mega port, by adding cultural and commercial facilities such as resorts, hotels, and shopping malls. The ‘Incheon Golden Harbor’ initiative will be launched in the first half of the year.
The project is worth $334 million (400 billion won) and will cover 25 districts by 2027. He also plans to work with local governments to establish a basic policy and develop plans to speed up the reconstruction of old planned cities. This will be done within the year.
In addition, the ministry will accelerate the undergrounding of the Gyeongin Expressway and Gyeongin Line Railway, a long-standing project in Incheon, and will begin construction of the Gyeongin Expressway undergrounding by 2027 and the Gyeongin Line Railway undergrounding in 2026.
