A Korean Air passenger plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Azerbaijan due to engine problems en route from Turkey to Korea on Saturday.
None of the 225 passengers and crew on flight 9956 were injured.
According to the carrier, one of the engines on the right wing of the A330-200 aircraft began vibrating violently and gave off sparks an hour and 50 minutes after takeoff. The pilot shut off that engine and shifted course to the nearest airport to land in Baku around two hours later.
"Fire engines that were standing by at the airport rushed to the airplane, but there was no further damage or fires," a Korean Air spokesman said.
Passengers were issued temporary entry visas to rest in a nearby hotel until a replacement plane arrived from Korea, which landed safely at Incheon International Airport on Monday morning.
Some passengers uploaded videos of their ordeal on YouTube and other social media, where they are heard to say, "My hands are shaking and I feel nauseous," and "The plane is shaking so much."
The Airbus A330-200 began operating in 1998 with engines from Pratt & Whitney. "We sent mechanics on the replacement flight who will inspect the entire plane and we'll offer compensation to the passengers for the delays."
