The Seoul High Court on Tuesday sentenced the plastic surgeon implicated in the death of singer Shin Hae-chul to a year in jail for medical malpractice.
A lower court gave Kang Se-hoon (48) a two-year suspended sentence back in 2016.
Kang performed stomach surgery without the singer's consent and in the process accidentally punctured his small intestine and pericardium, causing the peritonitis and blood poisoning that killed Shin in October 2014.
The doctor was also charged with violating medical laws by posting the late singer's medical records on the Internet.
The judge said, "Kang brought about the death of the victim by failing to take adequate steps even though the victim continued to complain about pain after surgery. Kang has yet to be forgiven by the victim's family and has failed to make reparations, which warrants stern punishment."
