Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong visited ZEISS, a key component supplier for cutting-edge Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment, in Germany to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between the two companies.

On Apr. 28, Samsung announced that Chairman Lee visited ZEISS’s headquarters in Oberkochen on Apr. 26 (local time), where he met with Karl Lamprecht, the CEO of ZEISS and other executives.

ZEISS is a well-known global optics company that holds over 2,000 key patents essential for advanced semiconductor production. The company is also the exclusive supplier of optical systems for ASML’s EUV equipment.

Each unit of EUV equipment uses more than 30,000 components from ZEISS. During his visit, Lee discussed the latest trends in semiconductor core technology and the mid-to-long-term technology roadmaps of both companies with the ZEISS executives.

Lee also toured the ZEISS factory to directly observe the production of the latest semiconductor parts and equipment. The visit included Samsung Electronics DS division’s Chief Technology Officer Song Jai-hyuk and President Nam Seok-woo, who oversees manufacturing and technology for the semiconductor division.

Samsung Electronics and ZEISS agreed to further expand their collaboration in the areas of EUV technology and advanced semiconductor equipment to strengthen the competitiveness of their foundry and memory businesses.
