The mild scent of irises will fill the Sangam World Cup Stadium during the opening ceremony for the 2002 World Cup on May 31, making it the first opening ceremony of its kind with "fragrance" in the history of the Olympics or World Cup events. Opening under the title of "From the East" the Korea World Cup Organizing Committee placed an order for the stadium to be filled with the most Korean-like fragrance, with the Pacific Corporation.
The company decided to use the scent of the Jeju iris and will soak "Banners of Harmony," which appear in the third stage of the ceremony in the perfume. The banners made of seven pieces of cloth 9m in width and 110m in length, and 10 pieces which are 9m in width and 69m in length, will be unfurled around the stadium to the ground.
The Pacific Corporation is planning to keep the banners in wood containers soaking them in weakened perfume (80kg of Ili perfume : 80kg of alcohol) after using agricultural chemical sprayers on them the day before the event.
