The nation's information-technology industry stands among the world's best and the government is determined to further sharpen its competitive edge forecasting a substantial growth in exports from the Information Technology sector, according to the Minister of Information and Communication Yang Seung-taek in a Thursday report to President Kim Dae-Jung at Cheong Wa Dae.
The minister expects Korea's IT sales abroad to reach US$51 billion with a US$15 billion trade surplus in this sector in 2002. Yang said his ministry will focus on promoting ten promising IT exports including mobile communications, systems integration, and high speed internet products.
In order to maintain a constant growth in overseas sales Seoul will also concentrate on the research of five new technological developments along with broadband internet and fourth generation mobile communications systems.
The ministry plans to select 300 promising small and medium enterprises to sponsor their promotion at overseas IT conventions and boost financial funding to assist in advancing domestic companies into foreign markets.
