The Korea Journalists Club, an organization of senior journalists, issued a statement, Monday, saying members were astounded that a Millennium Democratic Party candidate for the presidency had said he would close or nationalize a specific newspaper should he be elected.
KJC said if what was stated in private, or even under the influence of alcohol, was confirmed then it showed the candidate had lied, and this had serious consequences for press freedom.
The organization continued it would conduct its own investigation if necessary and urged reporters who were present when the alleged statements were made to report the truth in their articles.
