The Grand National Party and United Liberal Democrats said Friday they had requested the ruling Millennium Democratic Party to jointly convene the National Assembly Culture and Tourism Committee to investigate comments made by MDP presidential hopeful Roh Mu-hyun on the media. Spokesman Nam Kyong-pil said that if the alleged statements were true, they were anti democratic, leftist and abusive, and this should be investigated as they came from a man who wanted to be president.
Nam said Roh claimed that the allegations made by his rival Rhee In-je were lies and so the committee, calling related witnesses, could find out the truth.
ULD Spokesman Chung Jin-seop said that if a man who would be president had such a view on the media, he obviously lacked the capacity to be the country's top official. Chung called on Roh to reveal his views regarding the media and his true ideological bent.
In related news, the GNP issued a summary of a future white Paper titled "The Kim Dae-jung Regime's Media Suppression - The Freedom of the Press is Eternal" to commemorate the forthcoming Newspapers Day on April 7.
