The National Alliance to Defend the Media held a press conference Wednesday and demanded a National Assembly investigation to uncover the truth behind the tax probe into the media. A spokesman said that the book written by a Hankyoreh reporter had disclosed the government¡¯s intention to suppress the media by using the National Tax Service as a tool, calling it an action worthy of the old dictatorships.
Kang Tae-wook, head of the NADM asked how could anybody say a tax investigation was part of media reform and called for an end to confrontation between pro and anti government media groups. Head of the Korean Development System Institute, Jie Man-won, said the investigation was not just out of anger, but was part of an overall operation by the ruling group.
