Dr Norbert Vollersten, a human rights activist from Germany who was expelled from North Korea was arrested at Panmunjom and turned over to the German Embassy in Seoul, the United Nations Command announced Tuesday. UNC spokesman said he was arrested by JSA guards while attempting to cross over the Military Demarcation Line into North Korea.
Sources said he went to Panmunjom as a member of tour group accompanied by German and American reporters. His failed attempt was apparently to draw media attention to protests against North Korean authorities' human rights violations.
Dr Vollersten worked in a Pyongyang hospital for 18 months for the aid group, Komitee Cap Anamur.
