Amid heated competition among global automakers to made cars powered by fuel cells, Hyundai Motor has developed a version of its Santa Fe SUV that uses a hydrogen fuel cell. The car was unveiled Wednesday at a meeting of the California Fuel Cell Partnership (CFCP) in Sacramento. This is the first-ever successful development of a passenger car that exclusively uses a hydrogen fuel cell. Hyundai Motor said it had jointly developed the special Santa Fe model with a U.S. firm specializing in fuel cells, investing a total of US$15 million over the past six months.
According to Hyundai, a fully charged hydrogen fuel cell has a maximum range of 160 km. The cars can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 13.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 124 km/hr.
