President Elect To Honor IMF Accord

The president elect, Kim Dae-jung, pledged Friday to honor completely the accord signed with the IMF and carry out the reform measures outlined within it sincerely and quickly. He also proposed, at a news conference after his confirmation, a summit meeting with North Korea and the resumption of sending emissaries to achieve this.

Kim said that the most important task he faces is to recover and strengthen national credibility and promised reforms that would ensure Korea will never be in the same situation again. In addition, he pledged to create a fully liberalized market economy with equal treatment for overseas and domestic investors. Emphasis was placed on the parallel development of democratic and market reforms to make business completely independent from government, but incorporating measures that will foster small to medium sized companies in a competitive environment.

A spokesman for the National Congress for New Politics (NCNP) said that Kim Dae-jung had called US president Clinton and prime minister Hashimoto on Friday morning to ask for active support in solving Korea's financial crisis.

Kim is to visit the US on December 22 to meet with president Clinton, followed by a stop in Japan on his return and wants to strengthen cooperative ties with Pacific rim nations.
