¡®Kangam,¡¯ age 86, passed away in his residence in Chungbuk province on February 8, 1999.
Song was a singular scholar in Korea, specializing in Confucianism and Chinese language and calligraphy in a modern Korea where few such authentic scholars survive.
Since childhood, he practiced Chinese language and calligraphy, mastering styles of calligraphers from the Tang and Sung dynasties in China.
Soon, he established his own ¡®Kangam¡¯ style, which he continued to refine throughout his life.
Song remained true to the tradition of orthodox Korean culture by wearing traditional Korean hats and costumes every day.
He refrained from social activities such as accepting honors or academic positions.
Song is often compared to the bamboo tree, which may wave in the wind but always stays in place.
