The Story of Chunhyang
 ACT I - LOVE AND FAREWELL
|
SCENE 1 Meeting at the Kwanghan Pavillion
- Scenery 1 : Opening scene-Dano Song
- Village people are fully enjoying Dano day, singing an exciting Dano song and playing all sorts
of folk games.
- Scenery 2 : In the studying room
- Even the young gentleman Mongryong(leading role), who has always been absorbed in reading, asks
Bangja(Lee's servant) about places be worth seeing near the town Namwon, being excited by
bright spring weather.
- Scenery 3 : Visiting the Kwanghan Pavilion
- The young gentleman Mongryong is dressed up and heads for Kwanghan Pavilion looking over the
beautiful sights of mountains and rivers.
- Scenery 4 : At the Kwanghan Pavilion
- At the Kwanghan Pavilion, Mongryong finds Chunhyang riding on a swing and orders his servant
to bring her but she ignores him and goes back to her house.
SCENE 2 Love
- Scenery 1 : Reading a book
- After having made promise to meet Chunhyang, he passes very slow days. All he is thinking
about is the lady only.
- Scenery 2 : On the way to Chunhyang's house
- Mongryong and Bangja are on their way to Chunhyang's house.
- Scenery 3 : Promising to marriage
- He meets Wolmae(Chunhyang's mother) and makes an earnest request to marry him to Chunhyang.
The young couple tie the marriage knot and pledge eternal love.
- Scenery 4 : Song of love
- Chunhyang and Mongryong sing and dance of love together.
SCENE 3 Separation
- Scenery 1 : Promotion of Mongryong's father
- Mongryong's father has been promoted to a higher position and he is also supposed to leave for
Hanyang, what is now Seoul. But unfortunately he can't take her with him and he is full of
sadness.
- Scenery 2 : Farewell song
- The gap between their social status forces them into separation and Wolmae gets angry to
learn that her son-in-law is not taking her daughter with him. Chunhyang and Mongryong spend
their last night together.
- Scenery 3 : At the Orijeong
- Chunhyang gives him farewell drink and a ring as a token of her chastity and Mongryong gives
her a mirror as a token of his unchanging love toward her.
SCENE 4 New governor
- Scenery 1 : Welcoming the new governor
- A new governor is on the way to Namwon showing off his power.

ACT II - ORDEAL AND REUNION
|
SCENE 1 Ordeal
- Scenery 1 : Checking up all the kisaengs(girls working at the drinking house) in the town
- At the new governor's welcoming party, all the kisaengs are at the party, while Chunhyang,
the fairest of the fair, doesn't show up. Raged with anger, the governor calls up Chunhyang.
- Scenery 2 : Soldiers
- Soldiers with threatening looks go to Chunhyang's house to arrest her.
- Scenery 3 : Arrest
- Chunhyang is most anxious to meet her husband. Regardless of Wolmae's appeal,
they take her to the governor's court.
- Scenery 4 : Torturing lady Chunhyang
- The governor takes every measure to win her over but she disobeys him. He gets indignant
and calls the judiciary officer to torture her until she finally loses consciousness.
She is taken to prison.
- Scenery 5 : In the prison
- In her dream, many faithful ladies come to jail to console her. Although sitting on the cold
prison floor, all her thought is about her husband.
SCENE 2 Passing the exam
- Scenery 1 : At the exam place
- Lee has passed an exam to be Royal Secret Inspector and designated to investigate people's life
in Cholla province.
- Scenery 2 : Summoning petty town officials
- Arriving at the province, Mongryong summons petty officials and dispatches them to investigate
Cholla Province.
- Scenery 3 : Chunhyang's letter
- Bangja carries Chunhyang's letter, written in prison, on his way to Hanyang and encounters his
master Mongryong without recognizing him. Reading the letter, Lee falls into deep sorrow.
- Scenery 4 : At the Baksuk hill
- Mongryong sings with sentimental recollection, standing on his beloved village. He hurries up
to meet Chunhyang.
- Scenery 5 : Peasants' song
- Investigating people's life, Mongryong is nearly attacked by peasants.
- Scenery 6 : Wolmae's despair
- Wolmae(Chunhyang's mother) and Hyangdan (Chunhyang's servant)are praying for her daughter and
her son-in-law. Meanwhile, Mongryong appears in front of them and acts like a beggar. Looking
at his miserable face, Wolmae loses all her hope and treats him with contempt.
- Scenery 7 : Meeting husband at the prison
- Waiting for her death, Chunhyang suffers from bad dreams. Mongryong comes to the prison
and they meet again. She never minds her husband's beggar-looking appearance, only thanking
his return.
SCENE 3 Reunion
- Scenery 1 : At the birthday party
- At the new governor's birthday party, Mongryong appears, pretending to be a beggar and leaves
a piece of paper.
- Scenery 2 : Royal Secrete Inspector
- Here comes the secret inspector sent by the King and he begins to prosecute corrupt officials.
- Scenery 3 : Prosecution
- He distributes grains in the storehouse to the people and sets all innocent prisoners free
except Chunhyang and dismisses the governor from his post and sends him in custody to Hanyang.
- Scenery 4 : Setting free Chunhyang
- After setting all prisoners free, Mongryong calls up Chunhyang.
- Scenery 5 : Chunhyang meets her husband
- Royal Secret Inspector shows Chunhyang's ring and she finds that the Royal Secret Inspector is,
much to her surprise, her husband.
- Scenery 6 : Peaceful world
- Spring comes to Namwon and Mongryong rescues Chunhyang's life. Auspicious! Auspicious!
Auspicious! Let's enjoy this happiness forever!
